Effect of food supply and population density on the variability of body length and some plastic characteristics of young red swordtail fish

Food supply influences the amplitude of variability of size in red sword tails [Xiphophorus helleri X X. maculatus], progeny of 1 pair of parents. This size variability increases even in the case of reduced rations. A transition from low to high rations is followed by a stabilization of the absolute index of the variance of fish size (mean squared deviation) and a corresponding decrease in the coefficient of variation of this character. Population density creates the same influence on the magnitude of variability of fish sizes. In this case the experimental fishes separate into two groups, slow growers and fast growers. The mean relative values of a series of plastic characters depend on the length of the fish body. Along with the growth process the values 1, pV, VA, pl, H, h, HCS increase while C and O decrease. [l = body length, pV = pectoventral distance, VA = ventroanal distance, pl = tail length, H = maximum body depth, h = minimum body depth, HCS = head depth at the occiput, C = head length, O = horizontal diameter of eye].
