Effect of gamma rays on essential oil and thymol content in carum copticum

Effect of gamma rays on essential oil and thymol content in carum copticum

Indian Drugs 22(7): 366-369

Effect of gamma rays was studied with respect to essential oil and thymol content in Carum copticum belonging to the family Umbelliferae. Seeds were treated with doses ranging from 5 kR to 50 kR. Enhancement in the essential oil and thymol content up to 5.20% and 71.89% respectively, was observed at 30 kR dose in R1 regeneration. Same trend of increase was noticed in R2 and R3 generation with slight improvement. The higher doses of gamma rays showed inhibitory action. Thus lower doses of gamma rays showed favorable effect on qualitative characters like thymol content.
