Effect of graded dietary calcium phosphorus ratios on growth and feed efficiency of weanling pigs

Two randomized block experiments lasting 47 and 42 days, respectively, were conducted with 48 weanling pigs each in order to study the effect of graded dietary Ca:P ratios on growth and feed efficiency. In the first experiment, Ca:P ratios of 0.8, 1.6, 2.4 and 3.2:1 at a constant level of about 0.7% P in the air-dry feed resulted in a linear decline of daily gains from 392, 362, 349 to 313 g, and in a linear increase in feed efficiency (kg total feed/kg gain) from 1.73, 1.79, 1.84 to 1.94. Correction of total feed intake for the different proportions of limestone (added to vary the Ca:P ratio) yielded feed/gain ratios of 1.73, 1.76, 1.78 and 1.85, respectively. In the second experiment, dietary Ca:P ratio was 0.8:1 for two groups and 3.2:1 for the third group. Feed allowance to the second group was restricted to the ad libitum intake of the third group (pair-feeding). Feed intake (corrected for limestone) averaged 30.0, 26.1 and 26.2 kg in 42 days, daily gain 417, 356 and 338 g, and feed/gain ratio 1.71, 1.75 and 1.86. Hence, the decrease in daily gain with increasing Ca:P ratio could not be fully attributed to the depression in voluntary feed consumption.
