Effect of heparin sodium on in vitro development of Plasmodium falciparum

The effect of heparin sodium on in vitro development of erythrocytic stages of 2 Indian strains of P. falciparum [from humans] was studied. A concentration of 5 U/ml or more of heparin was inhibitory to the parasites maintained in vitro by the candle Jar technique. Experiments with synchronous cultures suggest that the inhibitory effect was the result of failure of reinvasion process where free merozoites penetrate fresh erythrocytes.
