Effects of the HLA gene on the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) specific humoral and the cellular immune response were studied in 100 normal adults and in 64 children who were inoculated with live attenuated varicella vaccine. The results summarized were as follows. There was no significant association between levels of VZV-specific immune adherence hemagglutination (IAHA) antibody activity and HLA genes in both groups of normal immune subjects and vaccinated children. VZV-specific IgM antibody was detected in 4 normal immune adults and 3 of these subjects were also positive for IgA antibody. There was no particular HLA gene characteristic for the occurrence of these VZV antibodies. In the presence of VZV-specific lymphoproliferation in normal immune adults, a significant association was observed between the low responsiveness and possession of HLA-A2 (P < 0.025) and also between high responsiveness and Aw24 (P < 0.05). Similar significant association, i.e., low responsiveness vs. A2 P < 0.005) and high responsiveness vs. Aw24 (P < 0.025), were observed in the lymphoproliferative response of children who were inoculated with varicella vaccine. Aw31 was also shown to have an association with low responsiveness (P < 0.05).
