Effect of level of feeding during early lactation on milk yield and milk composition of cross bred cows

The effect of feeding level on milk yield and milk composition was studied in 18 lactating cross-bred cows (Brown Swiss .times. Sahiwal). These were distributed in 6 groups with 6 treatments consisting of factorial arrangements of 3 levels of energy (90, 110 and 130%) and 2 levels of protein (90 and 100%) of NRC [National Research Council] (1966) standards. The feeding stuffs used were oat (Avena sativa) silage and berseem (Trifolium alexandrinum) as roughages and 6 concentrate mixtures. The 90, 110 and 130% energy levels were termed as LE, ME and HE, and the 90 and 110% protein levels as LP and HP, respectively. The milk yield, 4% fat-corrected milk (FCM), solids-not-fat (SNF) and fat yield were significantly (P < 0.01) affected due to level of feeding. Body weight gain increased significantly (P < 0.01) as the energy level increased. The increase in protein level did not affect the live weight change significantly. The increase in milk and FCM yield was significantly (P < 0.05) higher at each increment of energy intake. The response per kg TDN was lower when the energy was increased above ME when compared with LE level. The response to increased level of energy was curvilinear and followed the law of diminishing returns. Level of protein in the ration did not affect either fat, protein or the SNF percentage of milk. The SNF percentage increased significantly (P < 0.01) as the level of energy with diet increased.
