Effect of lineatin concentration upon the catches and flight behavior of trypodendron spp coleoptera scolytidae

In the Black Forest region [West Germany] field tests were carried out to determine the effect of different concentrations of the aggregation pheromone lineatin, in combination with ethanol, upon the catches and flight behavior of Trypodendron spp. [forest pest] populations. T. domesticum (L.) and T. signatum (F.), both hardwood species, showed a preference for lineatin in ethanol at 10-1 ml/ml; highest numbers of T. lineatum (Oliv.) a conifers' species, were caught with lineatin at 10-3 ml/ml, but results might have been influenced by increased release rates of .alpha.-pinene, from the host trees. Patterns of flight during attack were neither species-specific nor influenced by lineatin concentration. Significantly more .female.female. than .male.male. of T. lineatum and T. domesticum were caught with lineatin at 10-1 ml/ml. Sex ratios recorded for total catches of the season were 1 .male.:0.87 .female.female., 1 .male.:0.98 .female.female. and 1 .male.:1 .female., respectively, for T. lineatum, T. lineatum, T. domesticum and T. signatum.
