Effect of metoprolol and of the metoprolol hydro chlorothiazide association in patients with arterial hypertension

Bollettino della Societa Italiana di Cardiologia 25(4): 333-345
Effect of metoprolol and of the metoprolol hydro chlorothiazide association in patients with arterial hypertension
The antihypertensive action of metoprolol and of the metoprolol and hydrochlorothiazide association was studied in 10 patients with essential hypertension. The patients, after 3 days of washout, underwent 4 wk of treatment with a placebo the 1st wk, with 200 mg/day of metoprolol the 2nd wk, with 200 mg/day of metoprolol + 25 mg/day of hydrochlorothiazide the 3rd wk and again with 200 mg/day of metoprolol the 4th wk. A significant decrease was observed in the systolic and diastolic humeral arterial pressure lying and standing, more evident in the week of treatment with the pharmacological association. The cardiac frequency also showed a significant reduction, although the orthostatic reflex remained. There were no variations worth mentioning in the plasma electrolytes, save for a slight reduction of the serum K in the period of treatment with the association and a modest rise in the period of treatment with metoprolol. In the patients with chronic bronchopathy, there was no deterioration in the respiratory function, and in the patients with diabetes mellitus, there was no relevant interference with carbohydrate metabolism.
