Experiments were conducted on irrigated meadow-brown soils of Nshavan, Armenian SSR, USSR. The effect of time of NH4NO3 application, singly and combined with superphosphate and potassium salt (6 variants) was studied. Mineral nutrition had a low effect on eggplant leaf water retention capacity. The leaves lost > 50% of their water reserves after a 1 1/2-h drying-off period. A well developed root system provided the plant with a normal water regime. A tendency for decrease of water retention capacity of eggplant leaves was observed under the effect of fertilizers, especially in the variant with N application prior to planting of seedlings. P-K fertilizers were the exception. Application of N fertilizers separately and combined with P-K a month after seedling planting is recommended. Xeromorphic characteristics and increased productivity resulted from this type of fertilization.
