Effect of morphine on gastric acid secretion in anesthetized cat

Effect of morphine on gastric acid secretion in anesthetized cat

Journal of Pusan Medical College 21(2): 63-68

The effect of i.v. administration of morphine on gastric acid secretion was investigated in the anesthetized cat. Moprhine, 150 .mu.g/kg per/h, increased the basal gastric acid secretion. After the beginning of morphine infusion, the onset of the acid secretory response was variable, appearing after 30 min to 3.5 h, and the maximum response was observed after 2.5 to 5 h. There appeared to be considerable differences in individual responses to morphine. Gastric acid stimulation by morphine was strongly inhibited not only by naloxone, an opiate antagonist, but also by cimetidine, an H2-receptor blocker or by atropine, a cholinergic receptor blocker, suggesting a cooperative interaction between opiates and other stimuli of parietal cells. Morphine evidently stimulated gastric acid secretion by a mechanism sensitive to atropine and H2-blocker, probably involving opiate receptors.
