Effect of nucleus and cytoplasm on the chloroplast structure of maize leaf mesophyll

Effect of nucleus and cytoplasm on the chloroplast structure of maize leaf mesophyll

Genetika i Selektsiya 20(6): 463-472

Sixteen maize lines were studied in combination with different types and sources of sterile cytoplasm. Results from the morphometric, mono-factorial, and bi-factorial analyses of variance for 15 characters of chloroplast structure in leaf mesophyll showed that the variability of the 15 ultra-structural characters analysed depended to a greater extent on genetic factors (nuclear and cytoplasmal); the differences observed in some quantitative characters of the chloroplast ultrastructure in lines with the same nucleus but with different cytoplasms were due to the effect of cytoplasmal genes on quantitative characters; line with different nuclei differed significantly from one another in the quantitative character combinations. Analysis for degree of similarity after the cluster method proved that grouping chloroplast ultrastructural characters was not strictly in accordance with their genomes, the cytoplasm having a considerable share in the group of lines. Nuclear genes had a higher effect on quantitative characters of chloroplast ultrastructure. However, cytoplasmal genes could modify considerably the effect of nuclear genes. The effect of nuclear genes was statistically significant for all the 15 characters analysed, while the effect of cytoplasmal genes was proven only for a few of them.
