Effect of nucleus and cytoplasm on the ultrastructure of mitochondria from maize leaf mesophyll

The ultrastructure of mitochondria was investigated for 8 quantitative characters in 16 maize lines with nuclei of the lines WF9, A-632, B-37, B-73, cytoplasms of N, M, C, T-type and J. Rb sources. Results obtained by the morphometric and mono-factorial analysis of variance of leaf mesophyll mitochondrial ultrastructure in the maize lines investigated showed that all characters had statistically significant high Fisher coefficients, therefore their changes were related to a greater extent with genetic factors (nuclear and cytoplasmic) than with the plant's individuality, with causal environmental deviations, etc. Cytoplasmic genes could alter considerably the quantitative parameters of mitochondrial ultrastructure, but the effect of the cytoplasm depended also on nuclear genes since one and the same cytoplasm could have opposite effects in case it was of different genetic background. The analysis of the similarity degree after the cluster analysis method showed that the 16 lines investigated were not grouped in relation with the nuclear or with the cytoplasmic genes. The characters typical for the degree of inner mitochondrial membrane development could vary due both to the effects of nuclear genes and to cytoplasmic genes. In such cases the interaction between nucleus and cytoplasm could play an important role.
