Effect of rate and frequency of nitrogen application on dry matter yield and nitrogen content of para grass brachiaria mutica

Effect of rate and frequency of nitrogen application on dry matter yield and nitrogen content of para grass brachiaria mutica

Tropical Grasslands 12(2): 127-132

The response of para grass to N applied after each harvest (every 6 wk) or after alternate harvests (every 12 wk) at 200, 400, 600 and 800 kg ha-1 yr-1 was measured in terms of dry matter yield, protein content and efficiency of N utilization. The experiment was conducted over a 3 yr period in the Markham Valley of Papua, New Guinea. Dry matter yield and N content increased with level of N applied, however response was less at higher rates of N. While yield of dry matter per Kg of N applied decreased with increasing N rates, the percentage of N recovered increased. Frequency of N application had no effect on total dry matter yield but more frequent application resulted in slightly higher protein content of the grass and also considerably reduced the variation in dry matter production in sequential harvests.
