Effect of rate and method of nitrogen application on its uptake dry matter production and their partitioning in dwarf wheat

Effect of rate and method of N application on dry matter production and N uptake at different growth stages of wheat (cv. Sonalika) was studied under field conditions Kanpur [India]. N fertilization increased dry matter and N yields at all growth stages of wheat. Two peak periods of dry matter production and N uptake, one at late-tillering stage and the other at milk, stage were noticed. Maximum leaf and stem growth occurred at flowering and mild stages, respectively. Maximum N accumulation in leaves occurred at late-jointing stage in untreated or plants fertilized with full N dose at sowing. N given in a split application showed highest N uptake by leaves at flowering stage. Stems accumulated maximum N at the flowering stage in general. On an average, of the total dry matter produced, about 20-22% was recorded the late-tillering stage, 55-60% the flowering stage and 95-97% the dough stage. However, 51, 67 and 99% of the total N uptake was obtained at these respective stages. All-basal treatments showed higher percent translocation of N to the grain than split application of N.
