The growth of grass in spring following different rates and times of application of N fertilizer was studied using swards which had previously been intensively managed. Levels of N were 75, 100 and 125 kg/ha and the N was applied from late Feb. to late March. Increasing the rate of N above 75 kg/ha resulted in only small, though significant, increases in DM [dry matter] yield. Yields in the late April/early May period were highest following N application before 17 March. Grass nitrate N levels suggested that with normal fertilizer rates there is little likelihood of producing toxic nitrate N levels in the spring growth of ryegrass dominant swards.
