Effect of rates and methods of nitrogen application under different soil moisture regimes on the yield and quality of wheat

In the winter (rabi) seasons of 1971-72 and 1972-73, an increase in the level of irrigation up to a soil moisture tension of 0.63 bar markedly increased the grain production of 'Kalyan Sona' wheat (Triticum aestivum Linn. emend. Thell.) at economic levels. N application up to 150 kg/ha significantly increased the grain yield, crude protein and tryptophan content in wheat flour. The economic optimum dose of N was 110.0 kg/ha. At the low level of N supply (50 kg/ha), application of 1/4 of the dose on foliage was more efficient in enhancing grain production than application of the full dose in the soil.
