It was shown that membrane bound ATPase from Lactobacillus casei synthetizes 5-10 nmol ATP/mg protein under pH jump from 6.0 to 8.0 in the presence of ascorbate only. ATP synthesis is carried out by nonequilibrium state of the enzyme with half-life time 5-7 s formed by ionization groups with pK = 6.8 - 7.0.
