Effect of salivary gland active principle parotin and insulin on lipid metabolism in diabetic rats

The effect of parotin active principle of salivary glands on lipid metabolism of alloxan diabetic rats was studied. Animals [24 rats] were divided in 4 groups: group I (control animals); group II (diabetic animals); group III (diabetic animals treated with insulin) and group IV (diabetic animals treated with parotin). Free fatty acid and glucose dosages were recorded from blood from all the animals of all groups at time periods of 0, 4, 8, 12, 24 and 32 h. The animals of the groups III and IV received insulin (group III) and parotin (group IV) after the 1st dosage (time 0). Parotin caused a decrease in the plasma concentration of free fatty acid in diabetic animals as did insulin. As far as the hyperglycemia was concerned parotin also caused a lowering of the glycemic level in diabetic animals.
