The effects of single amino acid substitutions on the energetics of the reversible thermal unfolding of the.alpha. subunit of tryptophan synthase from Escherichia coli were studied by differential scanning calorimetry. The replacement of glycine at position 211 in the wild type protein with either arginine or glutamic acid in missense mutant proteins had little effect on the thermal stability of the.alpha. subunit.
