Effect of sources levels and methods of nitrogen application on the yield and nitrogen uptake of the potato

In a 2-year experiment N as ammonium sulphate showed significantly higher tuber yield (215 to 243 q/ha) than urea (192 to 220 q/ha) and N uptake by tubers and haulms (83.6 and 23.3 kg/ha with ammonium sulphate and 73.2 and 21.1 kg/ha with urea, respectively) in 'Kufri Chandramukhi' potato (Solanum tuberosum Linn.). Application of ammonium sulphate by placement in furrows was superior than broadcast application for the tuber yield, whereas urea showed the reverse trend. The sources as well as methods of N application did not affect the concentration of N in the plant. The concentration of N in the leaves, tubers and haulms showed a high correlation with yield. More than 60 kg N/ha as urea reduced the plant emergence when applied by placement, but the effect reduced appreciably when it was applied by broadcast. Apparent recovery by N by potato from 120 kg N/ha of ammonium sulphate was 55% as compared to 43% from the urea.
