The rate of CO2 exchange was studied in SO2-susceptible and SO2-tolerant seedlings progenies of Scotch pine after 3 day-exposure in 1.0 cm3 SO2 m-3, 6 h per day. The CO2 exchange rate, and the CO2 compensation concentration (.GAMMA.) were established using an IR CO2 analyzer. SO2 inhibited the photosynthetic (PN) and photorespiration rates (RL) and increased .GAMMA. to a much greater degree in progenies of susceptible individuals than in progenies of tolerant ones. Dark respiration rate (RD) was stimulated by SO2 only in progenies of tolerant individuals.
