Effect of temperature and pre soaking on teliospore germination in urocystis agropyri causing flag smut of wheat

Effect of temperature and pre-soaking on the germination of teliospores of U. agropyri (Preuss.) Schroet causing flag smut of wheat was studied in vitro. Pre-soaking in water at 18-20C for seven days followed by incubation in the presence of fresh host tissues at the same temperature for 24 hrs. or at 14-16 C for 36 hrs. induced the highest percentage of germination. The temperature of incubation affected the rate as well as the percentage of teliospore germination. At 18-20.degree. C, the germinating teliospores of produced promycelia in 12 hrs, sporidia in 18 hrs and infection threads in 24 hrs. At 14-16.degree. C, the formation of promycelia, sporidia and infection threads was observed after 18, 24 and 36 hrs. of incubation, respectively. At 5-7.degree. C no infection threads were observed even after 96 hrs of incubation. Significance of these results in relatin to the incidence of flag smut in India has been discussed.
