Effect of temperature on seed sprouting and seedling emergence in seedling box for mechanical rice transplanting

This experiment was conducted to obtain some information of the temperature effect on seedling emergence habit of rice cultivars for mechanical transplanting. Seed sprouting ratio was higher under the high temperature conditions in range from 20.degree. C to 30.degree. C and showed little difference among cultivars under the high temperature condition but showed lower ratio in Tongil-type cultivar (Indica/Japonica) than Japonica-type cultivar at low temperature condition. Days for 90% seed sprouting ration were 1.6 days for Japonica-type cultivar and 1.8 days for Tongil-type cultivar under the 30.degree. C temperature condition and 2.6 days and 2.5 days under 25.degree. C, respectively, while this was about 3.0 days under 20.degree. C temperature condition. Particularly, night temperature was the most important critical factor for seedling emergence. Seedling emergence ration was a little lower with low night temperature under in range from 10.degree. C to 20.degree. C under the 30.degree. C day temperature condition. Seedling emergence length was longer with high night temperature condition. In general optimum temperature for seed sprouting was over 25.degree. C for Japonica-type cultivar and about 30.degree. C for Tongil-type cultivar and the temperature for seedling emergence was needed relatively high temperature up to 32.degree. C with maintaining night temperature over 15.degree. C.
