The effectiveness of posterior crossbite correction during the mixed dentition in preventing posterior crossbites of the permanent dentition was evaluated. Twenty-nine patients treated for the correction of posterior crossbites during the mixed dentition and 5 untreated patients were evaluated for the presence of posterior crossbites of the permanent dentition. Twenty of the 29 treated patients (69%) demonstrated no posterior crossbite in the permanent dentition, while all 5 of the untreated patients had at least 1 of the permanent posterior teeth in crossbite. The 29 treated patients had a total of 103 posterior teeth in crossbite during the mixed dentition and 19 permanent teeth in crossbite. The control group, which had a total of 17 posterior teeth in crossbite in the mixed dentition, demonstrated posterior crossbites in 18 of the permanent teeth. These results for both patient and tooth totals represent statistically significant (P < 0.05) correlations between the correction of posterior crossbites during the mixed dentition and the absence of posterior crossbites in the permanent dentition. Differences for the 2 most commonly used appliances, the Porter arch and the rapid palatal expander, were not statistically significant (P > 0.05).
