Caffeine effects on human semen quality after freezing preservation were investigated. Spermatozoa motility during an incubation time of 5 h at 40.degree. C and the O2 consumption alteration after adding rotenone, succinate, digitonin and 2.4-dinitrophenol were measured. Caffeine increased cryopreserved spermatozoa motility. The motility stimulation decreased during an incubation at 40.degree. C. After 5 h the increase of the motile spermatozoa percentage was not provable. Apparently a relationship exists between parameters of O2 uptake in presence of succinate and rotenone and cell membrane permeability. The respiration proportion in presence of succinate and rotenone to respiration without these substances increased after caffeine addition. Caffeine addition to cryopreserved medium has no advantages.
