Abstract
In one-step cultures of Microcystis firma nitrogen limitation was found to affect glutamin synthetase (GS) activity, the latter being related to NH4+ contents. In cultures with no NH4+ added, GS activity and ammonia concentration in the cells decreased with time of limitation. A positive correlation between NH4+ concentration and GS activity was observed only in cultures with no NH4Cl added. After addition of NH4+, GS activity and NH4+ concentration increased, but later a prolonged limitation led to a decrease in NH4+ concentration, GS activity remaining at the same level.
