The emergence of water shoots from dormant buds below large pruning cuts can nullify the aim of reducing tree size and improving light penetration. The application of a thick layer of lanolin or paint containing 1% NAA [naphthaleneacetic acid], IBA or IAA to such cuts markedly reduced the number of shoots emerging from below them and the length of these shoots; treatment with NAA in a normal pruning paint was as effective as any other. The effect of NAA on shoot emergence varied logarithmically with concentration, 0.5% being effective but appreciably less so than 1% although there was little gain from increasing the concentration to 1.5% or 2%. The application of auxin paints immediately after pruning was effective at any time during the winter, and when done in mid-April, a month after pruning in March, still had a marked effect. Cytokinin (BA [6-benzylamino purine]) applied to pruning cuts reduced the rate of bud emergence, though to a lesser degree than NAA. GA4+7 reduced the length of the shoots which emerged as well as the rate of emergence, although, again, the effective was less that of NAA. Wound healing, in terms of callus development, was little influenced by NAA but was greatly enhanced by IAA or IBA applied alone. BA and GA4+7 also induced callus growth on the cuts when applied alone or together.
