Effects of conservation method and stage of maturity upon the feeding value of forages to dairy cows 2. milk yield and feed utilization at restricted feeding of forages

Effects of conservation method and stage of maturity upon the feeding value of forages to dairy cows 2. milk yield and feed utilization at restricted feeding of forages

Swedish Journal of Agricultural Research 14(3): 141-150

Hay and silage cut at 2 different stages of maturity were compared in complete lactation trials with dairy cows. The forage was fed in equal restricted amounts while concentrate was fed according to milk yield. The experiments ran for 3 yr and comprised 131 lactations. Cows fed silage produced 4-14% more fat corrected milk (FCM) than cows fed hay cut at the same time and originating from the same sward. Postponement of the harvesting date of hay 10-20 days gave 8-10% decrease in FCM yield while the same postponement for silage gave a smaller decrease. A large part of these divergences was explained by differences in energy and protein content of the forages and in different concentrate intake. When silage was fed, there was a higher milk production than would be expected from the calculated nutrient intake. Feeding of different forages had only minor effects on the composition of the milk. No effect on the health or fertility of the cows could be demonstrated.
