The effects of mercuric chloride (MC) and methylmercuric chloride (MMC) on the ionic composition and osmotic value of the blood, Na+-K+-ATPase activity in the gills and rate of water uptake by the gills in rainbow trout (S. gairdneri), were studied. MC and MMC, when administered in the water or via perfusion of the gills, inhibited Na+-K+-ATPase activity in the gills, but only at lethal concentrations. Plasma concentrations of Na+ and Cl- were decreased by both compounds, even at sublethal concentrations. At these lower Hg levels a markedly enhanced water uptake by the gills was measured. A change in the permeability characteristics of the gills for water, rather than an inhibition of the Na+-K+-ATPase of the gills, is the primary reason for the Hg-induced effects on osmoregulation in rainbow trout.
