Effects of monensin sodium on apparent digestibility of perennial soybean glycine wightii cultivar tinaroo

Effects of monensin sodium on apparent digestibility of perennial soybean hay (G. wightii cv. Tinaroo) were studied in 9 adult sheep. The animals were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups as follows: 1, hay; 2, hay + 15 mg of monensin/animal per day; and 3, hay + 30 mg of monensin/animal per day. The coefficients of dry matter digestibility increased 35 and 20% for treatments 2 and 3, respectively, and those of protein digestibility incresaed .apprx. 20% as did the digestible protein ingested. The coefficients of digestibility of energy increased 43 and 27% with 15 and 30 mg of monensin/animal per day, respectively. Monensin did not affect either the N balance or the dry matter intake.
