Effects of nitrapyrin nitrogen materials and fertilizer application time on corn zea mays

Nitrogen management for maximum yield and N use efficiency by corn (Zea mays L.) must be developed for specific soil-climatic regions in Missouri. Nitrogen in sandy soils, under irrigation, is subject to loss by leaching while nitrate-N on clay loam and silt loam soils with a claypan is subject to loss through denitrification. Two experiments at four locations were established to evaluate the effect of including nitrapyrin with N fertilizers on corn N use efficiency. One experiment on Bosket loamy fine sand and on Putnam silt loam received 50, 100, 150 and 200 lb N/ac as anhydrous ammonia (AA) and urea-ammonium nitrate solution (UAN) spring preplant with and without nitrapyrin. Another experiment, with only AA applied at these same rates applied in the fall and spring preplant with and without nitrapyrin was conducted on Kennebec silty clay loam and a Mexico silt loam. Measurements included grain yield, leaf N and grain protein. Corn grain yield, leaf N and grain protein were significantly increased when nitrapyrin was included with UAN and AA application to the Bosket fine loamy sand. Yield was significantly increased by nitrapyrin only and the grain protein was significantly increased by increasing N rate on the Putnam silt loam. Nitrapyrin significantly increased yield, leaf N and grain protein when incorporated with AA on the Kennebec silty clay loam. Yield increase with nitrapyrin was most measurable with the fall application. A lack of response to fertilizer N beyond 50 lb N/ac on the Mexico silt loam was attributed to high N carryover from the previous four years of soybean (Glycine max (L.) merr.) cropping. Results from these studies suggest that an increase in yield with nitrapyrin would be realized for soils which have conditions conducive to N loss (leaching, denitrification), provided there is a high probability of response to N fertilizer.
