A field experiment was conducted on a typic Haplorthox soil found in Jaboticabal, Sate of Sao Paulo, Brazil, to study the isolated and combined effects of nitrogen (0-50-100 kg/ha N) and phosphorus (0-75-150 kg/ha P2O5) fertilizers in sweet sorghum. According to the data, in absence of N or P the stalk production was lower. On the other hand, when 75 or 150 kg/ha P2O5 was used the best N rates which gave the highest production were 65,7 and 86,9 kg/ha N. The concentrations of N and P in the leaves collected in the vegetative and flowering stages were significative correlated with the stalk production. It was observed that the nitrogen fertilization promoted an increase in the leaves content of P, Mn and Zn. There was no significative effect of the treatments in the ethanol yield/t of stalk.
