Effects of pinching and defoliation on lateral bud growth of mulberry shoots

Effects of pinching and defoliation on lateral bud growth (i.e., regrowth of the top-pruned shoots) of mulberry (Morus alba L. cv. Shin-ichinose) were studied. When one of the shoots sprouted from each low-pruned stump was pinched, one or two lateral bud(s) in the upper portion of the pinched shoot grew out and elongated. Whole (as well as partial) defoliation of these pinched shoots stimulated greatly sprouting of the upper lateral buds (up to 6 buds), but such defoliation depressed elongation of the twigs growing out from these buds in comparison with pinching only. When one of the shoots of each stump was allowed to remain and the other shoots were removed by low-pruning, pinching of the remaining shoot stimulated outgrowth of the upper lateral buds only slightly compared with pinching of the shoot in the unpruned tree. However, in these pruned trees simultaneous pinching of the remaining shoots with whole defoliation stimulated sprouting of the upper lateral buds more markedly (up to 9 buds) than simultaneous pinching of the shoots with whole defoliation in the unpruned trees. The results are discussed in relation to correlative growth of the tree, i.e., acrotonic regrowth of the pinched shoot, bud dormancy, and concurrent spring bud break within the long shoot (1-year-oldstem).
