Effects of salts hydrogen ions and auxin on cell elongation and hydrogen ion secretion in barley coleoptile sections

Effects of salts hydrogen ions and auxin on cell elongation and hydrogen ion secretion in barley coleoptile sections

Zeitschrift fuer Pflanzenphysiologie 83(5): 393-402

The effect of auxin (IAA) and pH on cell elongation and H-ion efflux by barley [Hordeum vulgare] coleoptile tissues was studied in the presence of salts. The final pH of external solutions was reduced by low auxin concentrations (less than 3 ppm) and an absence of salts. Auxin-induced cell elongation occurred at almost the same rate in the presence of salts and at higher auxin concentrations (up to 18 ppm). In this case a steady rise in the final pH of external solutions was observed. The pH optimum for cell elongation in the presence and absence of auxin was about 5.0. This pH optimum was almost the same as that required for maintenance of maximum osmotic pressure by the cell sap. The data presented support the hypothesis that auxin-induced cell elongation may not necessarily be accompanied by acidification of the external solutions.
