Effects of seed weight plant density and spacing on yield responses of onion allium cepa

Effects of seed weight plant density and spacing on yield responses of onion allium cepa

Journal of Horticultural Science 5(3): 247-252

The effects of seed weight, plant density and spacing on maturity date and yield of fresh market onions were studied in the field. No 2- or 3-way interactions were observed with seed weights averaging 5.2, 4.5 and 3.4 mg, densities ranging 7-100 plants m-2 and rectangularities of 1.8 and 7.0. The different seed weights did not produce any yield differences but bulbs from the heavier seed exhibited leaf collapse 2 days earlier than those from small seed. Small differences (< 1 leaf on the average) were also observed in the numbers of scale and green leaves. Yields were positively associated with density and negatively associated with rectangularity. Days to maturity, green leaf number, ring number and bulb size all decreased as both density and rectangularity increased. Lower yields attributable to rectangularity were largely due to decreases in jumbo (7.5-11.5 cm) size bulbs while higher yields attributable to density were due to increases in medium (5.5-7.5 cm) size bulbs. The overall effect of density was a shift towards smaller bulb sizes. Thus, rectangularity and density may be effectively used to control bulb size and yield.
