Effects of some herbicides applied in the forest to the fresh water fishes and other aquatic organisms part 1 survey on the effects of aerially applied sodium chlorate and a mixture of 2 4 d and 2 4 5 t on the stream community

Effects of some herbicides applied in the forest to the fresh water fishes and other aquatic organisms part 1 survey on the effects of aerially applied sodium chlorate and a mixture of 2 4 d and 2 4 5 t on the stream community

Bulletin of Freshwater Fisheries Research Laboratory 25(1): 41-53

The herbicide commercially called Kusa-tohru containing 50% sodium chlorate was aerially spread over mountain areas covering 70 ha in Ibaraki Prefecture [Japan] at a rate of 200 kg/ha. Herbicide concentration, behaviors of aquatic invertebrates and fish and histopathology of fish in the streams running through the applied areas were surveyed during and after application. The concentration of sodium chlorate reached a maximum of 57.2 ppm in the stream, but no significant effects were confirmed in the aquatic community. A mixture of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T commercially called Brush-Killer was aerially spread over a mountain area of 9.5 ha in Shizuoka Prefecture, at a rate of 150 kg/ha. The same criteria were evaluated as with sodium chlorate. The 2,4-D/2,4,5-T mixture was not detected in the stream during the period of the observation. No appreciable change was noticed in the aquatic community. In the additional experiment done in Iwate Prefecture 0.16 ppm of the herbicide was determined.
