Effect of rice straw, transparent polyethylene [PE] and black polyethylene mulches on growth and yield of Chinese cabbage in spring were investigated. Plants directly sown on April 10th, when is the optimum seeding time for spring crop, grew most rapidly and showed significantly higher plant weight in the transparent PE mulch plot than other treatments. Increase of plant weight was mainly resulted from increasing of the number of leaves and leaf width. Yield of the transparent PE plot was not different from the other mulch treatments compared, because rate of soft rot infection was significantly higher in that particular treatment. But it was significantly higher than the unmulched check when seeded in a warm seed bed on March 15th and transplanted in the open field on April 16th.
