The carbohydrate content in the ovarian and adipose tissues of the house fly varies cyclically, in correlation with ovarian development. Sterilizing agents, such as hempa, a chemosterilant, or X-rays, perturb carbohydrate metabolism. These perturbations have no direct connection with any action on the gonads. Direct action on the mechanisms controlling carbohydrate metabolism may exist. This action could be linked with an action on the neuroendocrine system, particularly the corpus allatum and corpus cardiacum.
