The maize stem-borer, C. partellus Swinhoe, was effectively controlled by in-furrow treatment with fenthion, quinalphos, disulfoton, carbofuran, fenitrothion, fensulfothion, at 2 g ai[active ingredient]/m row and carbaryl + BHC, aldicarb, phorate at 1 g ai/m row. For side-dressing, carbofuran, phorate, aldicarb, fenthion, carbaryl + BHC and fenitrothion were superior to disulfoton, fensulfothion and quinalphos. In the soil, carbaryl + BHC and fensulfothion were least persistent (55 days), disulfoton, quinalphos, aldicarb, phorate and fenthion, moderately persistent (81 days) and disulfoton highly persistent (172 days). When side-dressed all these insecticides reached below the tolerance level in the harvested cobs, whereas in the furrow treatment the harvest-time residues were above the tolerance level in cobs treated with fenitrothion, carbofuran, disulfoton, aldicarb and fenthion.
