Efficiency of early generation selection for yield and yield components was studied in the F3 of 4 crosses. The experiment material consisted of random and selected plant progenies. The gains made from selection in F2 were marginal in F3 for 1000 grain wt and number of effective tillers per plant. Early generation selection was not effective with respect to number of grains per panicle and grain yield per plant. Strict selection for yield should not be made in the early generations.
