The overall mean egg temperature for 12 nests during the period of full incubation was 35.4.degree. C, which is significantly lower than the corresponding egg temperature in P. montanus (36.4.degree. C). During this period the mean egg temperature increased significantly, possibly because the brood patch does not reach its level of maximum power of heat transfer until well on into the incubation period. The mean egg temperature was moderately influenced by the air temperature (especially below 10.degree.-15.degree. C), even during the continuous night-time incubation. All the females investigated managed to keep the overall egg temperature well above the threshold of embryonic development at the lowest temperatures to which they were exposed (-2.degree. to -3.degree. C). The incubation capacity of the female great tit is apparently well adapted to the climate normally encountered in the northern temperate region. Because the mean egg temperature was positively correlated with air temperature, this relationship affected the incubation time, which tended to vary inversely with the air temperature. Some females seemed to cope with fluctuations in air temperature better than others.
