Electrophoretic study of atlantic bluefin tuna thunnus thynnus from the eastern and western north atlantic ocean

Electrophoretic study of atlantic bluefin tuna thunnus thynnus from the eastern and western north atlantic ocean

Bulletin of Marine Science 30(3): 727-731

This study was initiated to determine whether Atlantic bluefin tuna (T. thynnus) from the eastern (Bay of Biscay) and western North Atlantic Ocean constitute a single breeding population or 2 discrete populations. Heart, liver, red muscle and white muscle tissues from eastern and western North Atlantic bluefin tuna were electrophoretically analyzed for 23 different enzymes. Tetrazolium oxidase was the only genetically based variant enzyme found of the 23 examined. Data support the hypothesis that bluefin tuna from the eastern (Bay of Biscay) and western North Atlantic Ocean compose a single breeding population rather than 2 discrete populations.
