Electrophysiological study of hippocampo neocortical connections in rabbits
Electrophysiological experiments in rabbits established that the location of the ascending connections between the main fields of the dorsal hippocampus (fields CA1 and CA3) and zones of the neocortex differed. During stimulation of field CA1 the zone of evoked potential generation was localized in the anterior-median sections of the limbic cortex, in the temporal and occipital areas; during stimulation of field CA3, in the anterior-median sections of the limbic cortex and in the parietal area. The ascending projections of field CA3 were directed primarily toward the surface and deep layers of the neocortex, and field CA1, toward the middle layers. Experiments with recording of evoked neuronal activity showed that hippocampal afferents from field CA3 are projected primarily in the deep layers of the limbic cortex. The bioelectrical reactions in the neocortex during rhythmic stimulation of field CA1 and CA3 of the dorsal hippocampus are distinguished by the nature of the dynamic shifts. The differentiated nature of the connections between CA1 and CA3 and various zones and layers of the neocortex were discussed.
