Embryological studies in trapa natans

Embryological studies in trapa natans

Acta Biologica Cracoviensia Series Botanica 21(2): 101-108

Embryological studies in T. natans originating from natural habitats in Poland showed a regular development of the male and female gametophytes. The mature embryo sac has a normal appearance. The fertilization of the egg cell gives rise to a zygote which develops into an embryo. After fertilization the primary endosperm nucleus undergoes only 1 or 2 divisions. Further divisions of the endosperm nuclei become inhibited. The nutritive function of the endosperm is taken over by the suspensor and nucellus. The differentiation of the suspensor and nucellus is connected with endomitotic polyploidization.
