Endometrial mucin histochemistry in different phases of the normal menstrual cycle

The different types of mucins in the endometrial glandular epithelial cells, glandular luminal surface secretions and stromal cells were identified and assessed histochemically. Sixty [human] endometria obtained from hysterectomy specimens were phased and subjected to a battery of standard histochemical techniques. The type of mucin secreted by the endometrial glandular epithelium and that which occurred on the glandular luminal surface differed in composition and the latter showed variations during the menstrual cycle. An attempt was made to correlate these qualitative and quantitative variations in the endometrial mucin content to blastocyst implantation.
