Endorphin gastrin and somatostatin containing cells of the gastroduodenal zone in gastric ulcer and chronic gastritis

Endorphin gastrin and somatostatin containing cells of the gastroduodenal zone in gastric ulcer and chronic gastritis

Klinicheskaya Meditsina (Moscow) 64(9): 84-88

The endocrine cells that produce gastrin (G), somatostatin (D), and gamme-endorphin (GER) in gastric and duodenal mucosa have been studied in 25 patients with ulcer of the body of the stomach, 14 patients with chronic atrophic gastritis, and 13 subjects of the control group. Sections were stained by the Grimelius technique and by the immunohistochemical method with PAP-complex. Atrophic gastritis concomitant with peptic ulcer and atrophic gastritis as the main disease are marked by a significant decrease in the GER-and D-cells in the non-metaplastic epithelium of the pylorus and by a significant increase in the D-cells in the duodenum. Hyperplasia of the G,- GER- and D-cells was found in foci of pyloric metaplasia of body of the stomach. Changes in the number of G, -GER-and D cells in gastric mucosa in ulcer of the gastric body is determined mainly by the concomitant chronic gastritis. A deranged correlation between the GER and G cells many be one of the factors which is responsible for activation of the proliferation of gastric epithelium and therefore may take part in the pathogenesis of chronic gastritis.
