Endoscopic biopsy and cytology in digestive tract carcinoma

Patients (121) with digestive tract malignant diseases were studied. From them, 69 were males and 51 females. The ages ranged between 18-89 yr. The diagnosis was based on clinical backgrounds and radiological study. Later an endoscopic exam was done and, under direct observation, biopsy was taken and lesion brushing was done for cytologic study. The instruments employed were EFB esophagoscope, GFBK gastroscope, JFB-2 duodenoscope, GIF-2 panendoscope and CFL colonoscope. Seventeen patients had the lesion in the esophagus, 12 at the esophagogastric juction, 73 in the stomach, 14 in the Vater ampulla and 4 in the colon. The biopsy results were positive in 105 cases, and the cytology in 101; when both procedures were combined it was possible to establish the diagnosis in 100% of the cases. These results emphasize the usefulness of combined biopsy and cytology in the study of patients with digestive tract carcinoma.
