Endoscopic detectability of early gastric carcinoma

Endoscopic detectability of early gastric carcinoma

Polskie Archiwum Medycyny Wewnetrznej 62(5): 409-414

In 1 yr 5 cases of early gastric carcinoma were diagnosed. All patients had definite symptoms and the diagnosis was based exclusively on gastroscopy with histological examination of the gastric mucosa. In 2 patients, lesions of the type IIa + IIc, in 2 III + IIc, and in 1 type IIa were diagnosed. Histological examination of gastric mucosa biopsy showed in 1 case highly differentiated adenocarcinoma, in 2 cases mucocellular carcinoma, in 1 case poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma, and in 1 case cellular atypia in the epithelium of glandular tubules without injury to the epithelial basement membrane. After establishing the diagnosis the patients were operated upon with confirmation of endoscopic diagnosis. Gastroscopy with histological examination of gastric mucosa specimens is the investigation of choice in the diagnosis of early gastric carcinoma and is sufficient for making the decision of surgical intervention.
