Endoscopic diagnosis of duodenal tumors

Endoscopic diagnosis of duodenal tumors

Ceskoslovenska Gastroenterologie a Vyziva 30(7): 411-419

In a series of 1758 duodenoscopies, 7 malignant and 3 benign duodenal tumors were diagnosed. While using an instrument having lateral optics, tumors were detected in 8 of 348 patients, and using an apparatus having prograde optics, tumors were found in 2 of 1420 patients. As to the malignant tumors, ampuloma was found 4 times, primary carcinoma of the duodenojejunal loop once and a mixed mesenchymal tumor with predominance of leiomyoma structures once. In 1 instance a metastasis of a bronchogenic carcinoma in the pancreas penetrated into the duodenal bulbus. The benign tumors included an adenoma from Brunner's glands, a neurofibroma of the bulbus with generalized neurofibromatosis and multiple polypous adenomatosis as part of Gardner's syndrome with striking regression of polyps during treatment with cytostatics for carcinoma of the rectum. Although duodenal tumors are rare, they should be considered in common diagnostics, using duodenoscopy in close association with X-ray examination.
