Endoscopic diagnosis of the early forms of stomach cancer

Endoscopic diagnosis of the early forms of stomach cancer

Sovetskaya Meditsina (3): 25-28

Cases of early forms of stomach cancer were analyzed. The endoscopic picture of the 3 main types, i.e., the polyp-like the planar and the ulcerous, is described. The early forms of the carcinomas may show no macroscopic differences from their benign precursors, i.e, they may look like a glandular polyp or a focus of mucosal hyperplasia in atrophic or hypertrophic gastritis (the polyp-like cancer), a post-ulcer cicatrix (the planar cancer) or a chronic gastric ulcer (the ulcerous cancer). The endoscopic signs of the early forms of cancer are changes in the coloration and the shape of the polyp, cicatrix or ulcer as well as their rigidity and bleedings on biopsy. The polyp-like carcinoma differs from the other endoscopic types by a homogeneity of its histological structure, minimal invasive activity and prevalence in people of over 60 yr of age. The planar and ulcerous cancer are twice as frequent in people under 60 yr of age and show no similarities as to their localization in the stomach.
